This tour brings you to one of the highest points of Costa Rica (Irazú Volcano) as well as to one of the loveliest landscapes this country has to offer.
The way up to the top of Irazú Volcano is a windy one, offering you spectacular views over the valleys amidst the countryside where farmers work arduously on their land. It provides you also an idea of the versatility of Costa Rican nature: where the road ends palms and cipreses have made way for tiny vegetation in a landscape that is called ‘paramo’.
Having descended to Cartago, you will visit the Basílica de Los Angeles, the most important religious centre in this catholic country. It is the terminus of a yearly pilgrimage that attracts more than a million of Costa Ricans.
Afterwards you will pay a visit to Lankaster Gardens, an investigation centre of the University of Costa Rica, which protects over 800 species of orchids and bromeliads, amongst others.
The tour continues to the Orosi Valley with its lovely scenery. Here you will visit one of the few colonial churches that remain in Costa Rica, before having a delicious lunch. On the way back to San José a stop at the rustic Casa del Soñador (the dreamers house) is planned, a centre for Costa Rican primitive art .
